HAVE YOU HUGGED A PLUMBER TODAY?

  • What would our society be like if we did not have clean water to drink?
  • How widespread would disease be without sanitary facilities?
  • What would our average life expectancy be without the current standards maintained in our water systems today?

Early in the 20th century, American plumbers adopted a slogan as both a point of professional pride and a public reminder of the important role they play: “The Plumber Protects the Health of the Nation”. During the time when plumbers were rebuilding the country’s infrastructure as part of the Works Progress Administration, that fact was evident to most Americans. Things got working so well and the public was so efficiently protected, people forgot how it got & remained that way.

There is no question that our health and life expectancy has improved immensely in the past century. It did not happen because of medical or scientific advancements alone, much of the credit should go to the plumbers and sanitary engineers. The contamination of drinking water was at one time the single greatest cause of disease & death for human beings. It still remains so for third world countries where typhoid fever, malaria and dysentery are still killing people today. The World Health Organization has acknowledged that the SARS virus that wreaked havoc in Asian countries several years ago, caused hundreds of deaths and costing billions of dollars in resources was spread through inadequate plumbing. In the dark ages, one third of the population of Europe was wiped out by the Black Plague which was caused by flea-infested rodents running rampant in raw human sewage.

In 2011 it is easy to take clean water and proper sanitation for granted. The next time you turn on a faucet and get a drink or water that won’t give you Montezuma’s revenge or you flush your toilet, think of all the plumbers and sanitary engineers who made it their life’s work to improve your life and the health of the nation.
