As much as I, PIZZA MAN, love Ohio, I still must remain true to my cause of reporting on great independent pizza shops. Buckeye Nation will understand my pain when I tell them that one of the greatest sources for gourmet pizza can be found in Pittsburgh, PA.
Mineo’s Pizza House continues to rack up best-of’s in area media polls. Run by sons Dominic and John, Mineo’s specializes in medium-crust pizza, heavy on the cheese, with a spicy-sweet tomato sauce. This is definitely not NY style it is a thicker crust that allows the pizza maker to go a little crazy with toppings and variations without making the crust completely fall apart when lifting a slice to get a bite.
Come prepared to eat a wonderful, greasy mess created when eating one of the pies. This gourmet shop has some of my favorite toppings (artichoke hearts, broccoli, meatballs, pastrami, shrimp, and many more). The menu is quite large as is common with true gourmet shops and they offer sandwiches, salads, soups, tons of pasta and really cool desserts. Dessert features Pittsburgh’s own Reinhold’s Ice Cream, along with cheesecake and various pies.
Now I do not suggest you leave Ohio for it, but if you are in Pittsburgh then make the trip and you’ll be glad you did!
